Sweets that bring family together.

In Mexican Culture, traditions play a significant role in adding charm and creating lasting memories. Many of which revolve around family festivities with an abundance of food.

Growing up my weekends consisted of family “get togethers”; whether it was to celebrate a special occasion or to pay a visit with someone we hadn’t seen in a long time. We would all sit around a table, adults and kids; sipping coffee or hot chocolate, passing around a paper sack of Mexican sweet breads from the local Panadería. Sharing quality time with our loved ones, hearing stories of simpler times. — Such beautiful memories.

Among the array of mouthwatering breads and pastries to choose from, one dessert holds a special place in the hearts of many—Mexican wedding cookies.

In this blog post, we will take a closer look at these delightful treats, and learn what makes them so special.

Everlasting traditions

In Mexican culture, these cookies hold significance as they are often served during weddings, holidays, and other joyous occasions. They are seen as a symbol of love, prosperity, and good fortune. I only wish I would have enjoyed them at my wedding. Sadly, with the overwhelming tasks of wedding planning I somehow let this tradition get past me. (Oops!) Nonetheless, they can be enjoyed anytime thanks to local panaderías / bakeries and at home bakers.

Simple yet decadent

They’re quite simple to make, with a delightful combination of ingredients. The traditional recipe typically includes butter, powdered sugar, all-purpose flour, finely chopped nuts (usually almonds or pecans), and a touch of vanilla extract. These ingredients come together to create a crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes these cookies truly irresistible. As you can see I added chocolate to my batch. Non-traditional, but I love chocolate and it complimented the cookie pretty well.

To prepare these cookies, the butter is creamed with powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Then, the flour, nuts, and vanilla extract are gently incorporated into the mixture until a dough forms. The dough is shaped into small balls or crescent shapes and baked until they acquire a delicate golden hue. Once cooled, the cookies are generously dusted with powdered sugar, giving them their distinctive snowy appearance.
